Michael Lacey was born on 1959 September. He studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign acquiring his Ph.D. in the year 1987. He was a mathematics person and loved to solve math problems. He argued about Banach spaces, iterated Logarithm laws, empirical functions, and even came up with theories that explained mathematical facts.

He got employed at the Louisiana State University. He also served at the renowned University of North Carolina based at Chapel Hill after earning his Ph.D. Later he acquired a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Indiana University for eight years. Lacey was awarded the Salem Prize with Christoph Thiele for the Bilinear Hilbert Transform.

He became a mathematics professor in 1996 at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and yet another fellowship arrived for joined work with Xiaochun Li in the year 2004. His intelligence got him a membership to the American Mathematical Society.

At the University of Arkansas, some students who knew him from attending his classes described Michael as a total introvert. It would be impossible for him to socialize or put effort at interacting with other people. Group work in math was not necessary because math is about more practice to achieve perfection. Lacey hadn’t been good at explaining himself. He was so into mathematics that terms which seemed obvious to him were complete and utter Greek for the rest of the class. The students further explain that he was no fun, it was always serious business with him.

But besides all his poker face and boring personality, he was a good lecturer. He acted as a good role model for the students giving them the right motivation.

He was true to his students and believed in their potential. Students from his class who become successful and claim they owe it all to Michael. He showed his student’s different ways of approaching things which had worked entirely in their favor.

Lacey’s hard work has inspired so many people who now emulate his footsteps. One student rather joked that with his lack of humor and intensity in seriousness his children find him mean.
