Kevin Seawright Making Positive Steps With CEDC

December 14th, 2015

Just over a year ago, financial guru Kevin Seawright took the helm of the newly re-opened Community Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) in Newark. The organization, which had come under much fire — and had closed its doors for five years — hired Seawright to move it in the right direction. In an interview with the Worldclass Magazine, Seawright offered his own philosophy he follows in regards to business and his career. Although he is enthusiastic, he will admit that he has a tough job.

Seawright hails from the Philadelphia area. After graduating from college, he worked for a number of state and federal organizations helping them navigate through the often complex task of fiscal issues. During his tenure, he won many excellence awards and even devised business models to help the government save hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Seawright say he sees a great deal of potential with the CEDC. Newark’s small business model has helped create 3,000 new summer jobs for Newark students, WiFi access and small business development. Seawright says he is honored that he is in the position to make a difference and hopes to encourage even more change in the city’s 20 diverse neighborhoods. He says the first step toward change is transforming attitudes.

Seawright says he’s had the same attitude about finances since he was a youth growing up on the tough streets of Philly. By the time he was 12, he was already working within the inner city trying to help better the lives of the poor. He says he encourages all students to think about going to college. “A college education will greatly enhance your chances of finding a good job,” says Seawright. He encourages his daughter Tia to have the same attitude. “The city of Newark is still a work in progress,” says Seawright to World Class Magazines.
